To create bent tempered glass all other processes such as edge polishing, drilling, grinding and cutting must be carried out before the tempering. A special furnace heats the glass, taking it to a temperature of 640 degrees Celsius. At that point the glass can be bent via rapid cooling with forced air drafts whereby the outer layers of the glass suddenly cool down and harden while the inner portion withholds the heat for a short time. When the inner portion subsequently cools down it contracts and induces compressive stresses in the surface of the glass balanced by tensile stresses in the body of the glass.
In addition to highly resistant customized bent glass this process also guarantees a high level of safety. In the event of accidental breakage bent tempered glass does not create dangerous jagged shards but shatters into fragments that are harmless if they come into contact with human skin.
Extreme safety – in compliance with EN 12150-1 standards – and superior mechanical strength and heat shock resistance make the products ideal in areas that entail constant human interaction such as shower boxes, extraction hoods, home furnishing elements and lighting fixtures.
